Update : New DiamondView(tm) & Auscert (SGTL) Non Compliant Diamond Grading Laboratory

DiamondSure

DiamondSure™ is an easy and convenient way to determine whether a polished stone is a natural diamond or needs further analysis to ascertain its identity.

Simply, place polished stones, table down, on a measurement probe and the visible absorption spectrum is measured and analyzed.

Results are displayed in just seconds. What's more, DiamondSure™ can be used on both mounted and unmounted stones from .10 to 10 carats.
With DiamondSure™, only 2% of natural diamonds required further testing. In a matter of seconds, DiamondSure™ verifies type II diamonds, identifies all synthetics for further testing, including heat treated synthetics exhibiting the N3 absorption line, and determines synthetic moissanite.
Complete package includes: One DiamondSure™, external power supply, IEC main supply lead, spare lamps, cotton gloves, mercury calibration lamp, diamond cloth, and special tweezers. A custom carrying case is also included.

DiamondView

*DiamondView™ is a perfect complement to DiamondSure™.

Questionable diamonds that require testing beyond the capability of DiamonSure™ can be analyzed and identified with DiamondView™.

DiamondView™ works by producing a fluorescence image of a diamond.

Specifically, DiamondView™ uses a camera to display the fluorescence pattern created on the surface of a diamond after it has been exposed to shortwave UV light.

Given that the fluorescence colors and patterns from synthetic diamonds differ greatly from those of natural diamonds, DiamondView™ makes it possible for gemological laboratories and jewelry professionals to determine whether a diamond is natural or synthetic.

In addition, by obtaining a phosphorescence image, DiamondView™ also makes it possible to detect whether type II diamonds could be near colorless synthetics.

Many researchers and gemologists world-wide have utilized the DiamondView™ imaging capabilities for many other applications in diamond and colored stone identification.
Complete Package Includes:
DiamondView instrument (with integrated CCD camera and vacuum mounting system)
Mains Power adaptor
Mains Power adaptor cable with plug suitable for your country's power supply
USB A-B cable

Is Mr. Bates a trader or a grader ?
*
The above information was sent to us by Anthony Bates,Director of Auscert, one of the non compliant pseudo diamond grading laboratories in Australia.
*
I have been requested by Mr. Bates of Auscert to keep up to date with our facts and findings.
This is one of those rare moments where I will agree with him and I thank him for bringing this to my attention.
*
The old pictures and information on the DiamondSure(tm) and DiamondView(tm) came from De Beers the company responsible for manufacturing both these instruments and De Beers was named as the source of this information.
The new pictures come from the GIA British site. Previously only De Beers marketed these two products but now they are available for sale from GIA who has been appointed a retail distributor.
*
During the course of the last year we have subjected Mr Bates to justifiable scrutiny.
*
Gemological Qualifications?
Until only recently we believe Mr Bates has finally acquired a gemological qualification offered by GIA for those who need a diamond grading qualification quickly in the shortest space of time. We are not sure exactly which course it was suffice to say it was a diamond evaluation course not equivalent to residence course which is part of the esteemed graduate gemologist qualification which takes six months and a lot more money.
*
It is encouraging to see Mr Bates, who previously would never reveal his gemological credentials to us in the past, has finally become slightly more educated.
*
Colour Grading Diamond Master Set?
We still have no confirmation of Auscert's (SGTL) diamond master set that a laboratory requires for colour comparisons. The Colorimeter which we believe Auscert uses is unacceptable. No respectable laboratory that requires recognition would seriously use a colorimeter for ascertaining accurate colour grades on their diamond grading reports.
*
The colorimeter is simply a convenient indicator of colour. Those who use it rarely practise and train their eyes. By constantly comparing real diamonds with real diamonds one's colour grading skills are developed.
*
However there is still a problem.
*
Mr Bates and his sidekick Monica Crofts continue to falsely claim they are an independent diamond grading laboratory yet both of them are trading in jewellery and gemstones.
*
Mr Bates has a retail jewellery business and even has the chutzpah to list the Auscert logo on his retail jewellery website.
*
Hardly independent is it Mr Bates ?
*
Under the CIBJO Diamond Blue Book guidelines to avoid a conflict of interest both gem or jewellery traders and vendors are not permitted to certify diamonds.
The world jewellery and diamond governing bodies such as CIBJO and the WFDB do not permit jewellery or diamond dealer members to have cross ownership or interests in laboratories.
*
Can you imagine buying a diamond from a diamond vendor who certifies his own diamonds ? To understand why this is unethical read more here .
*
Monica Crofts has a coloured gemstone business.
*
I quote Mr Bates on Gemex 23rd August 2006:

"Simply, we are not a CIBJO approved Laboratory, thus we can do whatever we want. We are not answerable or legally bound to any of their codes of ethics or rulings from the blue book"

I further quote Mr Bates on Gemex 24th August 2006:
"I have never hidden the fact from anyone that I run a very small and exclusive design studio. When and if I require diamonds I will source them from many avenues in order to gain the best deal for my clients, At a retail level I have absolutely no preference of one type of cert over another"

Yet on the Auscert website of which Mr Anthony Bates is the Director it clearly says "We don't even sell diamonds! " and "Auscert is completely independent. We do not sell diamonds, nor are we affiliated with any manufacturers of diamonds".

Mr Bates has resented our exposure but it is very simple.

Either you are an independent diamond grader or you are a diamond/gemstone/ jewellery trader.

Attempting to gain credibility by attaining qualifications and upgrading a " lab " with recognised instruments might be admirable but all is negated and certainly NOT independent.
*
Professional Liability
Assuming Auscert ( SGTL ) has finally acquired suitable instruments for determining the differences between synthetic and natural diamonds, what of the thousands of diamonds that were graded and tested by the previously unqualified Mr. Bates ? ; not to mention inaccurate colour grades which under world trade organisations' guidelines require a minimum of three people to assess real diamonds against a real diamond master set.
More importantly what training has Mr Bates acquired to use this new equipment ?
*
Ridiculous Correspondence
Both Messrs Bates & Croft have written to me requesting I remove information that they obviously are uncomfortable with.
*
They have requested I do not show or publish their letter to me.
*
I understand completely. I would be embarrassed also.

*
However Diamond Imports have been emailed by Mr.Bates that Auscert is allowing other Australian " labs " the use of their instruments if required.
How benevolent. A non compliant lab assisting another non compliant lab or as my late father used to say, "You sleep with dogs you catch their fleas."

*

"If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise... "

Rudyard Kipling

*
Since there is only one recognised compliant diamond grading laboratory in Australia that has correctly colour graded diamonds and tested for synthetic diamonds since it's inception, that is DCLA in Sydney, with all due respect we are rather hesitant in using Auscert's questionable services while they continue to trade in gemstones and jewellery and falsely claiming they are independent.

Who Uses Non Compliant Diamond Grading Certificates?

Without naming any of our competitors the potential diamond buyer should seriously question why would a diamond vendor sell diamonds with a non compliant diamond grading certificate ?

More importantly if an Australian diamond vendor ,and in particularly a diamond website that conspicuously has all the logos from non compliant labs on their websites and the DCLA logo is missing, ask yourself why ?

The reason is either they have been banned because they are unethical or DCLA are tough diamond graders that will not compromise their reputation or be bullied into submission by a diamond vendor disappointed with a grading report.

This is the reason why there are those diamond vendors and drop shippers who now sell diamonds with their own in-house grading reports or manufacturers' grading reports because they are not real diamantaires who are able to buy wisely and become frustrated when a DCLA diamond certificate downgrades their diamonds.

Buying Diamonds In Melbourne Australia

The Melbourne diamond scene for years has been like a small village of misfits. There is no place like it in the world.

Basically if someone farts they all hear it.They all know each other. They all bitch about each other. Gossip mongers, friends one day enemies tomorrow there is no accountability. Most of the older established diamond dealers have moved on or passed away.

There are a handful left that I still have respect for but basically Melbourne has been over run by the "cowboys". A new breed of diamond merchant that has no respect for the time honoured principals of ethics and pride.Unprofessional, uneducated and uncaring.

All they want is your money without considering the long term future relationships that can develop future business.

The fact that we receive more complaints about Melbourne than any other part of the country confirms our suspicions that the diamond buyer must at all times exercise caution when purchasing a diamond from those who hide behind their facades.

The main offenders are website dealers who offer very little knowledge or service.

Those retailers who avail themselves of unrecognised diamond certificates as a shield of protection do not realise the potential damage to their reputations and the risk of losing a good client because they choose to use " Mickey Mouse "diamond grading reports or do their own in-house diamond grading reports.

Considering most diamond merchants all know each other and those who act as go-betweens by falsely claiming they are independent diamond graders when they are not is no accident that some diamonds receive up grades that no independent diamond grading laboratory would give normally. A bit of the " nudge nudge wink wink say no more " old buddy network can influence a diamond's grade without even looking at it.

We know for a fact that one retailer in another state does not even submit his diamonds for viewing but obtains the grades he requires through an online programme. The online "lab" just rubber stamps them and a pseudo diamond grading report complete with an overstated jewellery appraisal comes with the diamond purchase.

After over thirty years in the jewellery business I know it goes on despite the protests and denials.I have been told that these same Melbourne dealers ridicule me about being the unoffcial spokesman for DCLA.

If that is so then I am satisfied that I am biting and proud of my association.

It would be a lot less time consuming if I just sat on my arse and said nothing. In fact sometimes I feel I should say nothing but there are those honest jewellers and trades people in the industry who are simply being cheated of their livelihoods at the hands of those fly-by- nighters who have appeared on the scene in recent years with no track record in the jewellery industry.

I can not appoint myself as a doctor or a lawyer overnight yet anyone can profess to be a jeweller or a diamond dealer. Always check the credentials of diamond vendors and jewellers.

Their reputations are their strongest asset.

Diamond and Gemstone Bourse
Monica Crofts 9th.flr.227 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000

THIS IS THE SAME ADDRESS AS AUSCERT (SGTL)

" The Valuation's purpose is to provide a current retail dollar value. An Independent State Registered Valuer should supply the valuation. It is not recommended that you take a valuation from the vendor from whom you just purchased the item. Instead, ask them to supply an independent or third party valuation for the piece " Quote: Auscert Diamond Certificates and Diamond Valuations

Someone needs to explain to Messrs Bates and Crofts that a genuine independent diamond grading laboratory does not share the same premises as a gemstone trader AND THAT THEY SHOULD PRACTISE WHAT THEY PREACH !

The word bourse is a French word refering to the stock exchange or market place and has been also adopted by the diamond trade eg.Israeli Bourse meaning the Israel Diamond Exchange, New York Bourse etc.

Any appearances of perceived independence by this dynamic duo are now void AND HAVE NO VALIDITY !

Monica Crofts has been well known to me in the coloured gemstone business because of her late husband for as long as I remember although we have never met.Why she has chosen to affiliate herself with an unknown identity like Mr.Bates perplexes me.Her late husband was an exceptional gem merchant who I had the pleasure of meeting.

Monica is a member of the National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NJCV)

This is an additional attempt to lend credibility to an unrecognised and non compliant Auscert diamond grading certificate in Australia
*
An independent appraiser has no vested (personal or subjective) interest in the item you own or are buying.
*The objective opinion you get as to the grading or replacement value of an item by an independent appraiser is uncoloured by commercial concerns such as buying or selling.
*
The independent appraiser loses that objectivity when he or she also sells

For more information about the unqualified valuers in the NJVC read here

Mr Bates is a retail jeweller, but has opened a diamond grading laboratory with Monica Crofts as his supporting crutch with no laboratory experience.Either way they are both NOT observing correct worldwide protocols no matter how much they claim they do because they are traders first and self appointed graders second.

Surely my years of experience and higher qualifications would allow me to do the same but then I could not classify myself as being truly independent.

I would seriously welcome another compliant independent diamond grading laboratory in Australia but currently the competing non compliant labs in Australia do not even make it to first base and nor would I.

Imagine the outcry if DCLA commenced importing their own diamonds, grading their own diamonds and selling their own diamonds ? I would be the first to complain.

Yet those Australian non compliant diamond grading laboratories already do this and despite this betrayal are not condemned but in fact condoned and both diamond vendors and retail jewellers who retain their inaccurate services are colluding knowingly.

It is no secret who these people are.All you have to do is look at their websites or see what certified diamonds they are selling. Mixing recognised diamond certificates with non compliant unrecognised certificates to confuse their clients. These are the diamond vendors to be avoided.

As I write this, a lady who was ready to purchase a diamond from a competitor was told the diamond was now not for sale because she insisted on going to DCLA to verify the grading of a GIA certificate after I advised her to do so. This shows the type of grubby people out there now selling diamonds who know full well that not all diamond grading laboratories grade the same.Buyers Beware.

An International Diamond Council diamond grading laboratory such as the DCLA, despite not having the same high profile of the famous GIA a non IDC lab, is still a superior grader and we can prove this time again and again.

Years and years of marketing GIA and brainwashing because as everybody knows GIA " the world's foremost authority in gemology " has convinced us this is so despite their cut grade parameters which do not add up and our constant rechecking of colour grading which tends to be between half and one whole colour grade below the IDC standards. This is why we strongly recommend a second opinion of GIA certified diamonds prior to purchase from an independent lab.

Even more so since the bribery scandals despite us all constantly being reminded that " GIA – the World’s Most Trusted Name in Diamond Grading and Gemstone Identification " is always " the world's foremost authority in gemology."

Prior to purchasing any GIA graded diamonds it always now a matter of procedure to check the diamonds are true to their colour.

Years ago I would have never even contemplated checking.I now compare all GIA diamonds to DCLA graded diamonds and often have to reject many GIA D to G colours because of obvious inconsistencies.

I noticed this also happening quite often even three years ago in our Israeli office and only realised later why there were old certified GIA diamonds constantly being used as a reference because GIA colour grading standards had deteriorated on many diamonds. There was a lot of confusion but everyone agreed that something was just not kosher.

Read our next story on GIA colour grade deception here .

In the meantime Auscert may misrepresent the diamonds they are grading intentionally or unintentionally and the potential risk is yet to be realised as I have constantly mentioned. The added problem is Messrs Bates and Crofts are grading the diamonds they are selling. This is just NOT appropriate because of the obvious conflict of interest no matter how much they may protest.

Monica Crofts and Mr.Bates should decide which direction they are heading. Traders or Graders but not both.

Make sure your diamond comes with an independently recognised diamond grading report AND ALWAYS VERIFY WITH A SECOND INDEPENDENT OPINION.

It's your only protection.
