32 CARAT SQUARE EMERALD CUT SOLD USD$7.7 MILLION


A SQUARE, 32-carat emerald-cut diamond has been sold for $US7.7 million ( AUD$8.32 million) at Christie's in New York.

The diamond belonged to billionaire philanthropist Leonore Annenberg, a former staffer in the Reagan administration, who bought the diamond for her 90th birthday.

The flawless diamond, about the size of a walnut, sits on a ring,flanked on both sides by smaller pear-shaped diamonds.

The stone was cut by Manhattan jeweller David Webb.

Christie's estimated it would sell for $US3 million ($3.24 million) to $US5 million ($5.4 million).

The auction house said the previous record for a 30-carat square cut diamond was $US3.1 million ($3.35 million).

The buyer of the ring was not identified.

Annenberg died in March, aged 91. She served as US chief of protocol for Ronald Reagan.

Her husband, billionaire publisher Walter Annenberg, died in 2002. Source
